PreS.-Gr. 2. Written for the SeeMore Readers series, this colorful book introduces firefighters and some of the vehicles and tools they use in the line of duty. Beginning with pumper trucks and ladder trucks seen on city streets, the discussion moves on to rescue vehicles used for airplane crashes, forest fires, and fires on ships or in buildings by the water. Two or three lines of fairly simple text appear on each double-page spread, along with a color photograph illustrating the equipment and activity discussed. The directness and clarity of both text and photos make this a good choice for beginning readers as well as for younger children fascinated by the subject. K-Gr 3-The dramatic full-color photographs of firefighters at work will immediately capture readers' attention, but this is really a book about the machines that fight fires-pumper trucks, ladder trucks, quint trucks, even fireboats. Most of the time, Simon clarifies quantitative concepts; for example, the eight spotlights on a searchlight truck could illuminate a sports stadium at night, but there is no equivalent for the reference to 100 feet in the air. Long after the machine cards in the book (only in the paperback edition) are gone, readers will be caught up in the visual drama and the interesting facts.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Mt.
